Yet ANOTHER endangered (Federally protected) Green sea turtle was found entangled in hotel beach chairs on South Ft. Lauderdale Beach MAP. The chairs were tethered together with a steel cable which was wrapped around the turtles neck when we found her. We were able to free the turtle and she laid her eggs. FWC officer was on scene and this incident has a filed report.  FWC officer Darral Thomason  Incident # FWSA-10-0FF-6679

This was the 2nd entanglement with beach furniture in the same location in 9 days caught on video..

STATUS UPDATE:

The hotel requested that their beach chair vendor  (Aloha Water sports 954-462-SAIL) keep the cables higher on the chairs. The cables are in place to prevent guests from leaving beach chairs on the beach to protect sea turtles.
Additionally,  they moved the chairs approximately 20' West. The hotel / vendor has the proper permits for beach furniture.
On 7/22/2010 A third green sea turtle nested in the same location and passed all of the chairs, the sail boats and went all the way to the steps of the hotel entrance, proving that this effort is simply not enough.
The hotel has been responsive to us and is concerned for the safety of the turtles. We have offered to work with them and with the City of Fort Lauderdale to learn from these incidents and to help them set a good example for for others to follow. This is issue is a code policy issue more than any individual business entity.
