The Dedication of our Public Volunteer Staff is Second to None.
Even though we all have Jobs and bills to pay - we all do as much as we can to monitor the nests that we feel are in the worst case scenario. Some nests have no dune vegetation and hundreds of lights that will draw the hatchlings into the roads, down storm drains, swimming pools or to private property and away from the ocean. The only thing that will keep these sea turtle hatchlings going into the water is our volunteer program. During our rescue operations it is common for us to engage passers-by and to organize observer groups on the beach to utilize the rescue opportunity as a real life education that is interactive with our staff. Education is the Best Tool!
We are everyday people that have made the choice to make the change. For 8 months out of the year we re-arrange our lives to save the Lives of these helpless 2-inch Sea turtle hatchlings. Only 1 in 10,000 will survive to be a reproducing adult. Throughout their life cycle they will encounter many perils from bad lighting and pollution from beach goers on the nesting habitat to the human marine traffic of ships, boats, jets skis and many water contaminating pollutants such as toothbrushes and medical waste, all kinds of plastics, petroleum, lead, carcinogenic chemicals, fishing hooks and nets.
If this generation of Sea Turtles does not make it to adulthood, the population will continue to decline to record lows.
